Here is a letter from the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens. Let’s help make them one of the “Great Public Spaces” in Canada! The real competition is a few places in Toronto.. Now we love Toronto.. But we love Vancouver more! And we want to show off one of our gems. So vote away!

Dear wonderful folks at BOB,

We’ve been nominated as one of the The Great Places in Canada in the “Great Public Spaces” category!

There are first, second and third place winers based on votes, we believe….we need your help to be number 1!! The three categories are “Great Streets,” “Great Neighbourhoods,” and “Great Public Spaces.” We’re in Great Public Spaces.

http://www.cip-icu.ca/greatplaces/en/place.asp?id=5930

You can only vote once each time you go on the site AND have to wait a while between visits. Please pass this to all your network and ask for their support for us. The voting goes on until the end of February; this is going to be a long campaign

Celebrating Our Community Partners

In December we held our annual holiday open house in cooperation with Tradeworks. It was a delightful and well-attended event—the perfect place to celebrate our community partners! We honoured employers Impark and Trimpac-Sysco for their outstanding commitment to hiring local inner-city residents and working with BOB to support them. We also recognized two fellow agencies—Tradeworks Training Society and the Salvation Army Belkin House—for their outstanding contribution to the lives of local residents and the spirit of communication and cooperation they show in partnering with BOB to improve the lives of their clients and members.

Impark

Impark has continued to be a leading partner in diversity hiring. Thanks to Barb, Van and Leah, they have hired 11 individuals for various positions from CSR to data entry. Their commitment to working with BOB has not only improved the lives of many but it has also created a positive change in the culture of their call center.

“They looked after me, now I can look after them”

Jack Johnson* is a maintenance worker at the Lookout who truly appreciates the value of a daytime work schedule and a book of bus tickets. Jack was formerly a hotel banquet manager. As a self-described workaholic, the stressful twelve hour days that went long into the night cost him his relationship with his wife and family. He turned to alcohol to forget his troubles and wound up on the street, unemployed, sleeping on train tracks and camping out in the mountains for several years. Jack reached a turning point after ending up in the hospital, where a social worker got him a room at the Lookout shelter. He says “I’ve met so many good people over there. And they gave me a wake up call.”

After getting sober Jack was ready to make a change, improve his health, reconnect with his son, and go back to work. Having worked in hotel management, as a fisherman and a carpenter he had lots of skills, but needed help creating a resume. He connected to Pathways where he “clicked” with Chelsea. She helped with computer skills, resumes and job applications. After months of no calls back, he suddenly got 5 calls in one week! The last was the Lookout, looking for a maintenance worker. The choice was clear for Jack. “They looked after me, now I can look after them. That’s my payback.”

He was then faced with the challenge of how to get to work at his new job. The work site is in North Vancouver, but he lives in the inner-city. Jack came to BOB to get the bus tickets he needed to get to work for those crucial first two weeks until payday. While bus tickets may seem like a little thing, they’re not to someone like Jack. As a fisherman, he would walk from the North Vancouver shipyards and over the Lion’s Gate bridge to downtown for entertainment and community. In his words, “little things like bus tickets mean a lot”.

Having been on the job for almost 2 months, Jack finds the work is more than just routine maintenance. He has the chance to be the positive role model that he encountered when staying at the Lookout himself. “I can look after people…I can see what they need, what the problem is. I understand what they are going through.”

Now Jack works eight hour days and says “I have time to enjoy everything”. This is a big change from his old career where he rarely had free time, and a huge change from his life on the streets. Now that winter is just around the corner, he “will be up in the mountains skiing,” a pastime that his son also enjoys and they can do together when visits. He hopes that by sharing his story he can help others in his situation feel like they have a choice. The Lookout is fortunate to have such an enthusiastic and compassionate maintenance worker join their team. Congratulations Jack, we wish you all the best!

*Not his real name. Jack wishes to remain anonymous.

EMPLOYER PARTNERSHIPS: PROVIDING SUPPORTIVE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE INNER-CITY

In this issue we’re celebrating some of our employer partners and the recent hiring they’ve done. Employer partnerships are key to ensuring that opportunities developed as part of a greater process of economic revitalization are inclusive and accessible to inner-city residents. When we partner with employers for hiring, we seek their commitment to work closely with our Employment Support Coordinators (ESC). By doing so, if a person’s life circumstances affect their performance on the job, the employer informs BOB as soon as possible. The ESC can then intervene and support the employee with counselling, further training, and whatever they need to keep the position and succeed on the job. For many of our clients, this supportive intervention means they can continue on the positive life path they have worked hard to carve out for themselves and avoid losing the job, losing self confidence, and having to start over again. So without further adieu we want to celebrate our employer partners and the important role they play in our network of support!

London Drugs: The Woodwards location of London Drugs recently posted a shelf stocker position through BOB. GM Garth Kohlenberg is a big supporter of hiring locally and has hired our candidate Judith Yamada. In addition, Judith will be trained as a cashier due to her strong skill set. Congratulations Judith!

Acme Labs: Acme Labs is the latest employer to sign our Employer Commitment form. They are now posting positions through BOB and have interviewed candidates who require supportive opportunities. They have a strong history of supporting their employees and we welcome them to our family.

Firehall Arts Centre: James Sarmiento is a BOB candidate who was recently hired as a custodian for the Firehall Arts Centre. Congratulations James! The Firehall is an inner-city employer who works closely with BOB and have hired a variety of BOB candidates. They currently are looking for an amazing Administrative Coordinator.

GOODBYE ADA!

It is with mixed feelings that we say farewell to Ada Mo-Williams. Ada has been an Employment Support Coordinator with BOB for over two years, where she has played a key role in delivering the Supported Employment Program. Ada is passionate about her career, and has used her skills to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Her counselling has helped many clients through difficult times to help them find success both on the job and in life. Ada, you have gone above and beyond to support your clients and we congratulate you on all the great work you have done here at BOB. We wish you all the best in your new life as a mom and can’t wait to go for dim sum together after the baby comes!

It is with mixed feelings that we say farewell to Ada Mo-Williams. Ada has been an Employment Support Coordinator with BOB for over two years. In this position she has played a key role in delivering the Supported Employment Program. Ada is passionate about her career, and has used her skills to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Her counseling has helped many clients through difficult times to help them find success both on the job and in life. Today is Ada’s last day at BOB before going on maternity leave. For the past 9 months we have enjoyed watching her belly grow and being included in her journey towards motherhood, and now it is time for us to fondly say goodbye!

She is always ready to meet people at their level and support them according to how they would like to be treated. For Ada this has included workplace visits, conversations with employers and managers, going out for coffee, follow-up phone calls, personal invitations to the SHINE supper, referrals to health care services, help seeking housing, job-specific skills training and more. Ada truly cares about the clients she works with, and has developed lasting supportive relationships with many of them. Her philosophy of committed, well-rounded support addressing a variety of issues in people’s lives illustrates what we consider to be best practices in the delivery of supported employment services.

Congratulations to Karen O’Shannacery of Vancouver – tireless advocate for homeless people – as she receives the 2011 Order of British Columbia!

Karen O’Shannacery has worked for more than four decades seeking solutions and providing comfort to the homeless and disenfranchised of Vancouver’s downtown eastside.

Ms. O’Shannacery’s compassion for those less fortunate has led to the establishment of quality resources and housing. She has a thorough understanding of the issues, is a tireless advocate for homeless people, a respected, well-spoken leader and a team player who works across boundaries to achieve change.

Among her many successes, Ms. O’Shannacery’s has created 17 housing projects, including three multi-use buildings, renovation of two single-room occupancy buildings and the opening of Antoinette Lodge, subsidized housing in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. She co-founded a provincial shelter network and was instrumental in the purchase and renovation of New Westminster’s former College Place night club, which now serves as a homeless shelter and transitional housing.

Ms. O’Shannacery has served on committees, boards and organizations involved with homelessness, including the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy committee, the Urban Core Workers Community Association and municipal task forces on homelessness in Burnaby, New Westminster and North Vancouver, and she is an original long-standing member of the Metro Vancouver’s Regional Steering Committee on Homelessness.

Toby Barrazzuol says he’s not a garden expert, but he and the team at Eclipse Awards and It’s Saul Good Gift Co have created a beautiful rooftop space for everyone in their office and manufacturing facility to enjoy. They grow food like strawberries, tomatoes, figs and a variety of herbs; flowers like irises, mallow, wisteria, clematis and lilies; edible weeds like chickweed and sorrel; and drought-tolerant species like sedums. That’s a lot of biodiversity for what was recently an asphalt roof!

What’s more, they DIY’d the heck out of it! Most of the garden is made from reclaimed materials scavenged from the community or found on Craigslist. Pathways are pallets and recycled decking, planter boxes are washtubs, and pots are secondhand.

When Eclipse and It’s Saul Good moved in to their current building it required a few renovations to meet their needs. They used the renovation process as an opportunity to incorporate plants and gardening into their office culture. In anticipation of the rooftop garden they added several large crossbeams (made from a sustainable pressed wood product) to ensure that the roof could support the weight of 25 people plus the garden soil. They also added two large skylights that bring enough natural light in to sustain many office plants, including this beautiful mass planting of African Violets. Looking up through the skylights you get a sneak peek at the rooftop garden.

The garden has been a couple of years in the making, and Toby says managing the garden continues to be a learning process. Crows and seagulls show up regularly to snack on young plants and eat tasty berries, and they have free reign since there are long periods where no one is on the roof to scare them off. They have an irrigation system, but some of the plants have nonetheless whithered a bit in the scorching sun of the last few weeks. Also, there’s no formal process for employees to manage the garden, so it’s a bit harder to plan regular tasks like weeding and garden clean up. A recent success is the worm composter they’ve added to their office, which is rapidly turning food scraps into rich soil for use in the garden.

Interestingly, Toby reports that there has been some debate among their office over the purpose of the garden. Should it be wild and green, letting whatever wants to grow take root? Or should it be a place to cultivate food in a more purposeful way? For the time being they have come up with a great compromise, planting a central bed with 100 strawberry plants and letting a few edible weeds spring up in between.

This garden is a great case study for anyone interested in starting a green roof project and making their home or business that much more sustainable. We hope you can learn from Toby’s experience and develop one in your workplace. Congrats to the whole team at Eclipse and It’s Saul Good for working together to make this great project happen!

They do eat in, take out, and catering of – you guessed it – sandwiches!

In particular, they make hot sandwiches stuffed to the gills with gourmet meats, cheeses and veggies. They also have a nutella and bananna option for a sophisticated alternative to the old favorite PB&J. Their catering menu is more extensive, offering breakfast pastries, fruit platters, cheese platters, dips and more. They also offer free consultations if you want do do an extra special lunch presentation for your office, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with Thomas and let him know exactly what you need!

What we really admire about Scent of a Sandwich is that they’re on board with the idea of inclusive revitalization, where economic development that takes place in historically under-served communities like the DTES is intentionally inclusive of existing residents in businesses. Scent of a Sandwich has demonstrated their commitment to inclusive revitalization by partnering with local employment agencies like BOB and Pathways, hiring locally through the Pathways 100 Hired Challenge, and improving their formerly vacant storefront on Main Street between Pender and Abbot (in partnership with BOB and the City of Vancouver’s Facade Program). BOB also put on a BusinessLinks session with them to do a culinary & catering staff skills training event.

Furthermore, they’re also interested in being sustainable, and are doing all their deliveries by tricycle! Looks like they’re using disposable plates at the moment, though…surely that will change soon once they get more established.

You can check them out in their new location at 418 Main St. Welcome to the neighborhood from the whole team here at BOB!

BOB is Involved with some Great Local Businesses

As you may know, BOB’s mandate is to support an economic development model for Vancouver’s inner-city that is inclusive of existing residents and businesses. This is no small task, so we try to take a comprehensive approach. We work with entrepreneurs to help them get loans and grants to start their businesses. We work with business owners to provide HR services that support hiring people who are from the inner-city and have challenges to find and keep employment. We work with jobseekers to connect them to the opportunities we post. And we work with new employees to give them the practical support they need to keep their job and succeed.

We believe that this two pronged approach – working with businesses and residents – is key to creating new opportunities in the inner-city economy that help build community and social capital. A great example of the success of this model is the newly opened W2 Media Café in the Woodwards Building.

The BOB Loans program provided a portion of the start-up funding for the café. This funding complemented the countless hours of hard work W2 management and volunteers put in since 2002 to make their vision of a socially inclusive media arts and culture centre in the DTES become a reality.

W2 hired all local DTES and East Van residents to staff the café. They posted positions through their networks and through BOB’s JobPostings service. BOB’s BusinessLinks program assisted the W2 team with interviewing and candidate selection, and also sponsored barista training for 12 folks to get FoodSafe certification, customer service training, a programming overview of the media cafe, and more. Some of the successful candidates also received further support through our Supported Employment Program, getting the bus tickets and food vouchers they needed to make it to their first paycheck, and the life skills support and resources they needed to help them adjust to life on the job.

Cafe staff are now getting great opportunities to build skills and pursue activities beyond the cafe counter; several of our BusinessLinks graduates enthusiastically report getting involved with event co-ordination, volunteer coordination and program development for projects like the W2 Letterpress Studio and kids & youth media camp.

We congratulate W2 on the great job they have done building a fantastic social enterprise and inclusive community resource centre from the ground up.

Sitting on the street, sipping my iced americano at Columbia and Pender, I saw a beautiful sight. Gorgeous Dalias being delivered by bicycle! Doris from our local urban farm called SOLEfood, is taking flowers to Olla Urban Flower Project by my favorite sustainable mode of transportation.

SOLEfood Urban Farm is located at Hawks and Hastings in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. They produce local food and employ local residents, bringing fresh food to a colorful neighborhood. You can buy their produce at the Main Street Station Farmers Market on Wednesdays at 3-7pm.

Olla Urban Flower Project is a socially responsible business selling beautiful flowers in Gastown at 235 Cambie Street. She sources all her flowers locally, intends to hire residents from the neighborhood and is working towards zero waste. Megan Branson, who started the business, is graduate from the Embers Build a Business Program.
